Sensors and detectors are important tools used across science and industry. Specific detector systems are used as their interaction with light, radiation or particles generate an electrical signal that can be measured and stored. The detector system must be designed to provide the desired information from the interactions in the detector or sensor, whether that is measuring intensity and colour of light used to form a photograph in a camera or tracking the route and energy of a particle in a large particle physics experiment.

The Technology Department has experience and expertise in developing new and novel sensor and detector systems for a range of scientific needs. The developments are often in collaboration with other research institutions, universities and industry as is required when delivering the new tools to enable ground breaking science to be observed.
